Tokyo: Japan’s Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, following a decision by the World Heritage Committee during its 48th session held in Busan, South Korea.
The newly listed heritage site comprises 19 archaeological locations dating from the late sixth to the early eighth century AD across the cities of Kashihara, Sakurai, and Asuka Village in Nara Prefecture.
The site features the remains of imperial palaces, temples, gardens and ancient burial mounds, including the renowned Kitora and Takamatsuzuka tumuli, which are internationally recognised for their well-preserved wall paintings.
Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the UNESCO inscription highlights the historical significance of the site as a testament to the formation of the ancient Japanese state and its cultural exchanges with the Korean Peninsula and continental Asia.
He noted that the archaeological complex reflects the emergence of an ancient state in East Asia, shaped by centuries of political, cultural and economic interaction with neighbouring regions.
The Japanese government affirmed that it will continue working with relevant authorities to preserve the site’s outstanding universal value, raise public awareness of its historical significance and promote Japan’s World Heritage sites to the international community.
