    • Russian Scientists Develop Vaccine Candidate Against Bundibugyo Ebola Strain

    Moscow:  Russian scientists have developed a vaccine candidate that has demonstrated a strong immune response and protective efficacy against the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which is responsible for the current outbreak in Africa.

    Denis Logunov, Head of a laboratory at the Gamaleya Research Institute for Epidemiology and Microbiology, said the institute has developed prototype vaccines that showed protective efficacy in surrogate laboratory tests using simplified viral variants.

    He explained that the surrogate viral variants closely resemble the original Bundibugyo Ebola virus and represent an important initial step in evaluating the vaccine’s potential effectiveness.

    Logunov noted that further development of the vaccine depends on determining the need for its use and obtaining samples of the virus currently circulating in Africa. He added that the institute is prepared to continue the research if the relevant African authorities express interest and provide the necessary virus samples and information.

    Meanwhile, Andrei Prodeus, Chief Paediatric Allergist and Immunologist, said that evaluating vaccines against difficult-to-access infections relies on laboratory-developed surrogate virus models, which enable researchers to assess vaccine efficacy under controlled conditions.
