    • Social Development Ministry Holds Purple Saturday Forum on Disability Inclusion

    Muscat: The Ministry of Social Development today organized a public awareness forum titled “Techniques of Dealing with People with Disabilities” as part of the Purple Saturday initiative, reaffirming its efforts to promote social inclusion and raise awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities.

    The forum brought together employees and specialists from government entities and private sector institutions, aiming to encourage organizations to adopt more inclusive practices that support the participation and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

    The event featured a working paper on the social model of disability, highlighting the importance of adopting a comprehensive inclusion approach that ensures equal opportunities and enables persons with disabilities to participate independently in various aspects of community life.

    The paper was presented by Majda Sabir Al Balushi, a researcher in guidance and counselling, who stressed the importance of applying international accessibility principles in public facilities, services, products and workplaces to ensure equal access for all members of society.

    She also emphasized the importance of professional etiquette when interacting with persons with disabilities, including the use of appropriate and approved terminology, avoiding language that conveys pity or discrimination, and respecting their privacy and independence. She noted that assistive devices and equipment used by persons with disabilities should be regarded as an integral part of their personal privacy.
