Oman Turns Its Eyes to the Sky as Suhail Star Signals Seasonal Change

Muscat: Astronomy enthusiasts across the Sultanate of Oman are turning their attention towards the southeastern horizon in anticipation of the appearance of Suhail, or Canopus, a star traditionally associated with the changing of seasons and the gradual easing of summer heat.

Wisal bint Salem Al-Hinai, Head of the Community Outreach Committee at the Omani Society for Astronomy and Space, said Suhail is located approximately 313 light-years from Earth and is the second-brightest star in the night sky. It is distinguished by its yellowish-white appearance.

She explained in a statement to the Oman News Agency that the appearance of Suhail during the second half of August has historically served as an important seasonal marker for Omanis, who used it to organize agricultural and maritime activities and track the gradual transition in nighttime weather conditions.

Al-Hinai clarified that the appearance of Suhail does not directly cause a drop in temperatures or changes in weather. However, the star holds an important place in Oman’s traditional astronomical knowledge through the “Suhail calculation”, which was used to identify seasonal changes.

Omani sailors and sea captains also relied on the position of the star for navigation, including determining directions and routes during long maritime journeys.

The traditional use of astronomical observations extended beyond navigation. Star movements were also used to help regulate aflaj water distribution and irrigation schedules under traditional systems known as “athar” and “badah.”

Suhail has also become deeply embedded in Omani popular culture through traditional proverbs and inherited knowledge reflecting local communities’ experience in observing seasonal changes.

She noted that the star can be observed before sunrise towards the southeast, initially appearing close to the horizon before gradually rising higher and becoming more visible.

The annual return of Suhail, she added, provides an opportunity to combine modern astronomical observation with the preservation and documentation of Oman’s traditional astronomical heritage for future generations.
