    Suhail Returns to the Arabian Peninsula, Marking a Traditional Seasonal Shift

    Muscat: The skies over Oman and the Arabian Peninsula are preparing to welcome Suhail (Canopus), one of the most prominent stars in the region’s astronomical and cultural heritage.

    Suhail begins appearing on the southeastern horizon around August 24 each year and remains visible for approximately 53 days.

    Located around 313 light-years from Earth, Suhail is the second-brightest star in the night sky after Sirius.

    For centuries, its appearance was regarded as a traditional seasonal marker, associated with the gradual easing of summer heat and the transition towards more moderate weather. It was also used by communities to help determine the timing of agricultural activities, travel and maritime navigation.

    For generations, Suhail has been more than a star—it has been a guide to the changing seasons and an enduring part of Arab astronomical heritage.
