US Police Officer Killed, Another Injured in South Carolina Shootout

Washington: One police officer was killed and another was wounded, while a suspect was also killed during an exchange of gunfire near a park in Columbia, South Carolina.

Columbia Police Chief William Holbrook said at a press conference today that the incident occurred on Saturday after officers responded to a report of a dispute between two people.

He explained that one of the officers located a suspect near a vehicle matching the description provided to police, while another officer arrived at the scene to provide assistance.

An exchange of gunfire subsequently took place, resulting in the death of one officer and injuries to another. The wounded officer is in stable condition, while the suspect was also killed.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

According to FBI data, law enforcement officers continue to face significant risks while performing their duties. In 2025, authorities recorded 90,178 assaults against law enforcement officers, the highest number in a decade.

The data also showed that 53 officers were intentionally killed while on duty, with firearms being the most commonly used weapon in such incidents.
