Guinea-Bissau Holds Referendum on Expanded Presidential Powers

Bissau: Voters in Guinea-Bissau headed to polling stations today to participate in a referendum on proposed constitutional changes that would grant expanded powers to the president, ahead of general elections scheduled for December.

The referendum comes as the West African country seeks to return to a democratic path following a period of political transition.

If approved by the National Transitional Council, the proposed constitution would grant the president broader powers and reduce parliamentary representation, alongside other constitutional provisions.

The vote is being held ahead of the planned December general elections, which are expected to mark a further step towards restoring democratic governance in the country.
