Al Jabal Al Akhdar Sewage Network Project Reaches 68% Completion

Al Jabal Al Akhdar: The completion rate of the sewage network project in the Wilayat of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, has reached 68 percent.

Implemented by Namaa Water Services, the project combines major engineering requirements with environmental considerations, establishing an integrated system for wastewater management and the reuse of treated water.

The mountainous terrain of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, characterized by steep formations and varying elevations, presents engineering and construction challenges that differ from those encountered in flat areas. The routes of sewage and treated-water lines require precise planning and implementation, with technical solutions adapted to slopes, elevations and the natural characteristics of the site to ensure the long-term efficiency and sustainability of the infrastructure.

Eng. Ahmed Al-Houti, Director of the Al Jabal Al Akhdar Project at Namaa Water Services, said that implementing the project in such a mountainous environment requires a high degree of precision in planning and executing the routes of sewage and treated-water networks.

He explained that the project goes beyond constructing a sewage network, as it establishes an interconnected system covering wastewater collection, transportation and treatment, as well as the reuse of treated water. This enhances the project’s environmental value and improves water resource management efficiency.

Al-Houti noted that the project’s total cost stands at about OMR 2 million and is expected to be completed during the last quarter of this year.

The project includes transporting wastewater through a main line to the existing treatment plant, alongside the establishment of a network for transporting and reusing tertiary treated water for designated purposes.

The main sewage network extends 4.2 kilometres, with pipe diameters ranging from 500 to 700 mm. It also includes around 46 sewage chambers.

The tertiary treated-water network extends for approximately 9 kilometres. The project also involves connecting the treated-water network to a new pumping station and establishing a 6,620-metre pipeline from the treatment plant to Al-Yamani Park, with internal diameters ranging from 100 to 250 mm.

In addition, two pipelines will be extended and connected to pressure-reducing valve chambers to deliver treated water to beneficiaries. The lines have a combined length of 1,250 metres and diameters ranging from 25 to 50 mm.

Al-Houti said wastewater treatment represents an important means of protecting soil and groundwater from pollution, particularly in an environmentally sensitive and geographically distinctive area such as Al Jabal Al Akhdar.

He added that transferring wastewater to an integrated treatment system will help reduce traditional disposal practices and reliance on sewage tankers, thereby enhancing health and environmental efficiency while protecting natural resources.

He explained that treated wastewater is transformed from a byproduct of the treatment process into a valuable resource through reuse for irrigating gardens and green spaces. This gives the water an additional lifecycle and reduces the need to use freshwater for purposes that can be met through alternative sources.

Al-Houti stressed that the project embodies the concept of a circular water economy, whereby treated water is reintroduced into the cycle of use rather than the water cycle ending after its initial use. This approach helps reduce pressure on freshwater resources and improve the efficiency of water use.

The “Oman Vision 2040” report indicates that more than 50 percent of treated water is to be reused in the agricultural, industrial and service sectors.

Al-Houti concluded that the project directly supports the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, particularly those related to environmental protection, natural resource conservation, water security, the green and circular economy, efficient water use, expansion of sanitation services and the adoption of advanced technologies for wastewater treatment and reuse.
