    • Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption Disrupts 209 Flights at Jakarta Airport

    Jakarta, Sept. 6 (ONA) — The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia forced the temporary suspension of flight operations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, disrupting 209 flights as volcanic ash spread across parts of Java and Sumatra.

    Indonesia’s Transport Ministry said the country’s busiest airport was closed for several hours today after volcanic ash was detected in the area. The disruption affected both domestic and international flights.

    The volcanic activity began late Friday, while the meteorological agency reported volcanic ash at an altitude of about 6,000 metres over Java. Another ash plume reached approximately 15,000 metres and extended towards Sumatra and parts of Banten.

    The National Disaster Mitigation Agency urged residents to limit outdoor activities, wear masks and eye protection, cover water sources and exercise caution while driving due to reduced visibility.

    Local media reported that several schools cancelled activities on Saturday after students and residents experienced eye irritation. Some fishermen also suspended sea trips amid the volcanic activity.

    Authorities maintained Anak Krakatau’s alert status at Level III and prohibited people from approaching within three kilometres of the crater.

    Authorities also confirmed that there was no immediate tsunami threat.
