Oman Agriculture Ministry, Farmers Association Discuss Support for Farmers

Muscat: The Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources and the Omani Agricultural Association discussed areas of joint cooperation and challenges facing farmers during the second periodic meeting held at the Ministry’s headquarters today.

The meeting, chaired by Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources, reviewed the role of the Association in conveying farmers’ observations, needs and challenges to the competent authorities and enhancing direct communication between farmers and relevant government entities.

The meeting discussed ways to create a suitable environment for farmers to market their agricultural products, identify challenges encountered throughout the production and marketing stages, and establish cooperation mechanisms to support local agricultural products and improve their access to markets.

These efforts are expected to contribute to the sustainability of agricultural activity and enhance the economic returns for farmers.

The meeting also explored ways to improve the performance of Omani farmers through the use of alternative energy in farm operations and examined the contribution of small and medium enterprises in providing services to farmers.

The meeting forms part of efforts to strengthen partnership and cooperation between the Ministry and the Association and follow up on issues and challenges facing farmers across Oman’s governorates.

It follows a previous meeting that reviewed procedures for addressing farmers’ challenges and issues, assessed progress achieved and followed up on proposed solutions aimed at overcoming difficulties and advancing the agricultural sector.

The meeting stressed the importance of the Omani Agricultural Association as a partner in developing the agricultural sector and as a platform for enhancing farmers’ participation in presenting views and proposals related to the sector.

It also highlighted the importance of involving farmers in decision-making that serves their interests and supports Oman’s agricultural development objectives through a participatory approach that takes into account the sector’s needs and future requirements.
