Brussels: Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the European Union reached a record level during the first eight months of 2026, rising 45% year-on-year to 1.64 million vehicles, according to data released by Brussels-based transport and environment advocacy group Transport & Environment.

The data showed that EVs accounted for 22% of total vehicle sales in the EU between January and August 2026, up six percentage points compared with the same period in 2025.

Transport & Environment described 2026 as a “pivotal year for electric vehicle availability”, noting that the number of EV models available in the European market increased by 50% in one year as automakers expanded their line-ups to meet the EU’s emissions-reduction targets.

The increase comes as major automakers, including Volkswagen, introduce more affordable electric models, such as the fully electric Polo, as they seek to close compliance gaps and avoid potential fines.

European automakers accounted for around 60% of available EV models, adding 16 new models during the first half of 2026. Chinese manufacturers accounted for 21% of available models and introduced 11 new models during the same period.

The data also highlighted the impact of rising fuel prices, linked to the conflict in the Middle East, on drivers of internal combustion engine vehicles.

Diesel prices recorded the largest increase, rising by 38% since the outbreak of the conflict between the United States and Iran. The increase means that filling a 50-litre tank now costs motorists an additional €30 ($34).
