London: UK become the first country in the world to approve the use of the “Pfizer-BioNtech” vaccine against the Coronavirus.
British Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said the vaccine, which provides 95% protection, is safe for widespread use and issued a temporary authorization for emergency use of “Pfizer-BioNtech” Covid-19 vaccine to its population starting next week.
Starting from next week, the vaccination to be given to those most in need, such as the elderly in care homes.
The United Kingdom has already ordered 40 million doses, sufficient to vaccinate 20 million people, with each person getting two doses
Ten million doses will be available very soon, and 800,000 doses will arrive in the UK next week.
This is the fastest vaccine developed in history, taking 10 months to go through steps that usually take years.
“Relief is on the way. The Health Department is ready to start the vaccination process early next week,” Health Minister Matt Hancock said in a tweet on Twitter.
Although vaccination can start soon, people must be careful and take the necessary steps to prevent transmission and stop the spread of the virus, experts say.
Pfizer comments in the press conference : The UK government’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a temporary authorization for emergency use of our #COVID19 vaccine with BioNTech, marking the first emergency authorization of a #vaccine to help fight the pandemic following a worldwide trial.
We recognize that with hundreds of thousands of people becoming infected, every day, every hour, every minute matters. As we anticipate further regulatory agency reviews globally, we are focused on moving with the same level of urgency to safely distribute vaccine doses around the world, if we receive authorization or approval.
While our work is not done, this authorization is a goal we have been working toward since we first declared that #ScienceWillWin. Read more about this historic milestone in the fight against this dreaded disease:
