Fire at Swiss Ski Resort Leaves Dozens Dead Hundreds Injured
Geneva: Several dozen people were killed and around 100 others seriously injured in a fire that broke out during a New Year’s Eve party at the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, police said today.
The commander of police for the Valais region, where the resort is located, stated during a press conference that investigations so far indicate the blaze was accidental.
According to media reports, the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time (0030 GMT) and was accompanied by an explosion.
Police confirmed that emergency services responded immediately, with firefighters and several helicopters deployed to the scene. Rescue and security operations were still ongoing during the morning hours.
An emergency physician told Swiss broadcaster RTS that individuals suffering from severe burns were transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment.
