A decree was issued Monday amending the Kuwaiti Citizenship law, whereby the wives of Kuwaiti men are no longer entitled to obtain Kuwaiti citizenship.
The decree also allows the government to strip a person of the Kuwaiti citizenship if they had been naturalized through fraud, were jailed or fired from their public post for honor-related crimes, or for state security reasons, provided that the action is taken within 10 years of the naturalization.
As per the decree, a foreigner male obtaining the Kuwaiti citizenship does not entitle his foreigner wife to the citizenship. However, their underage children would be treated as Kuwaitis, and they can choose their preferred nationality one year after reaching the legal age.
The law also allows the Interior Minister to issue a decision to treat the underage children of Kuwaiti women married to non-Kuwaitis as Kuwaitis until their reach the legal age, in case the father is a prisoner, divorces the mother or passes away.
