UAE to Use AI-Powered Drones for Ramadan Moon Sighting
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to become the first country to deploy artificial intelligence-powered drones to assist in sighting the Ramadan crescent moon, according to an announcement by the UAE Council for Fatwa on Friday.
Moon Sighting Announcement
The UAE has called on Muslims to observe the crescent moon on the evening of Friday, February 28, which corresponds to 29 Shaban in the Umm Al Qura calendar used for determining Islamic months.
AI and Traditional Moon Sighting Methods
The Fatwa Council clarified that drone-assisted moon sighting is considered an extension of direct vision, aligning with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):
“Do not fast until you see the crescent moon, and do not break your fast until you see it. If it is obscured from you, estimate it.”
Despite this innovation, the UAE will continue traditional moon sighting methods, including naked-eye observations and astronomical observatories equipped with advanced technology. These observatories operate in coordination with national institutions, specialized centers, and astronomical bodies to ensure accurate results.
Ramadan Start Date Predictions
If the crescent moon is spotted on Friday evening after Maghrib prayer, Ramadan will begin on March 1. Otherwise, the holy month will start on March 2. The International Astronomy Centre predicts that Ramadan is likely to begin on March 1.
Saudi Arabia has also urged its citizens to observe the crescent on the same evening.
Reduced Working Hours During Ramadan
The UAE’s Federal Authority for Government Human Resources has announced shortened working hours for government employees. Similarly, private sector employees will have their daily work hours reduced by two hours throughout Ramadan.

The sighting of the crescent moon is deeply spiritual and cultural for Muslims worldwide, as millions anticipate its confirmation to mark the beginning of Ramadan.
