Artificial Intelligence Offers New Insights into Antarctic Iceberg Movement

London:  The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has unveiled a new artificial intelligence–based tool designed to track the movement and fragmentation of icebergs, marking a significant advancement in climate change monitoring and forecasting.

In an official statement, the Survey explained that the innovative system enables the unique identification and naming of individual icebergs, allowing scientists to follow each iceberg’s lifecycle from its formation to eventual disintegration. This process had previously posed major challenges using traditional monitoring methods, particularly after icebergs break apart into numerous fragments.

The tool relies on satellite imagery to determine the shape and size of icebergs, after which artificial intelligence algorithms link each fragment to its original iceberg through a process known as “iceberg calving and fragmentation.” This approach provides continuous tracking, even as icebergs split into smaller pieces.

According to BAS, the system has been validated using observational data and delivers what it described as “critical intelligence” that contributes to improving climate modelling and projections. The technology is also expected to be adaptable in the future to support maritime navigation in polar regions, where dense iceberg concentrations pose serious risks to shipping safety.

The Survey noted that while iceberg calving is a natural process, scientific evidence indicates that the frequency and scale of such events in Antarctica are increasing, a trend widely linked to human-induced climate change. These changes carry implications for ocean circulation, global sea levels, and marine ecosystems.

The development represents a major step forward in understanding the dynamics of polar ice systems and their broader impact on the global climate.
