Haiti Stampede Kills 30 at Historic Citadel During Event

Port-au-Prince: At least 30 people were killed in a stampede at the Citadel Laferrière in northern Haiti, one of the country’s historical landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Jean Henry Petit, head of civil protection in the northern region, said the incident occurred as large crowds of students and visitors gathered at the site to attend an annual celebration.

He explained that the stampede took place near the entrance to the citadel, noting that rainfall contributed to worsening conditions during the incident.

For his part, Haiti’s Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé said in a statement that many young people were present at the event, adding that the identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed.

Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and provide necessary assistance.
