Beijing: China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has commenced construction of a carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) project at the Dongfang 1-1 gas field in Hainan Province, southern China.
The project marks China’s first pilot initiative to apply offshore carbon injection technology aimed at enhancing natural gas production.
Upon completion, the project is expected to store more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually through permanent underground sequestration.
The initiative utilizes carbon injection technology, a component of CCUS, which involves capturing carbon dioxide generated during gas extraction, purifying and compressing it, and reinjecting it into reservoirs to support the extraction of hard-to-recover gas reserves.
Yu Fa Song, Head of the CCUS project at the Dongfang 1-1 field, said that the project will shift carbon management operations from onshore facilities to offshore platforms, contributing to emission reduction at the source and improving operational efficiency.
He added that the project will be integrated with existing production infrastructure upon completion and will support the development of carbon-rich gas resources in the Yinghai Sea, alongside strengthening subsea pipeline capabilities.
