Copper Rebounds After Sharp Losses as Shanghai Stocks Decline

London:  Copper prices rose by more than 1 percent today, recovering part of last week’s losses amid easing geopolitical concerns in the Middle East and declining inventories in Asian markets.

Copper traded at $13,659 per tonne on the London Metal Exchange (LME), after recording its sharpest daily decline since March during Friday’s trading session, which coincided with a broad sell-off in global equity markets led by technology stocks in the United States.

The recovery was supported by a decline in copper inventories at warehouses monitored by the Shanghai Futures Exchange, which fell to 169,512 tonnes by the end of last week, the lowest level recorded since the beginning of the year.

Market analysts attributed the decline in inventories to continued demand linked to clean energy projects and electricity infrastructure expansion in China.

Elsewhere in the base metals market, aluminium prices remained largely unchanged, while tin prices fell by 1.4 percent.

Market participants continue to monitor expectations regarding US monetary policy following stronger-than-expected employment data, which has increased the likelihood of a further interest rate increase by the US Federal Reserve later this year.

Higher interest rates typically weigh on economic activity and can reduce demand for industrial commodities, including base metals.
