Makhachkala: Authorities in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia’s North Caucasus have declared a state of emergency following severe floods that disrupted electricity supply to around 500,000 people, according to official reports.
Emergency teams continue restoration efforts for a second consecutive day, working to repair power infrastructure damaged by torrential rains and flooding.
Reports indicate that more than 110,000 residents remain without electricity, while access to several areas has been affected due to damaged and flooded roads.
The floods, described as the worst in over a decade, caused significant damage in the capital Makhachkala and other cities. No fatalities have been reported so far.
Authorities also confirmed the evacuation of residents from hundreds of homes, in addition to the collapse of part of a railway bridge along the Khasavyurt–Kizilyurt railway line.
Flooding is a recurring seasonal challenge in the North Caucasus region, often linked to heavy rainfall and snowmelt.
