Cyclone Ditwah Leaves 159 Dead, 203 Missing in Sri Lanka
Colombo: The death toll from Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka has risen to 159, while at least 203 people remain missing, according to official updates released today.
Sri Lankan media reported continued flooding in parts of the capital, Colombo, after the cyclone caused extensive destruction across the country. The Disaster Management Center stated that the northern part of Colombo is experiencing severe flooding, with water levels in the Kelani River continuing to rise.
Although rainfall has begun to subside, many roads in the worst-affected Central Province remain impassable. Authorities confirmed that the floods and cyclone destroyed more than 20,000 homes and forced 122,000 people into temporary state-run shelters. A further 833,000 individuals required government assistance after being displaced.
Officials added that approximately one-third of Sri Lanka remains without electricity or water due to the collapse of power lines and damage to desalination plants. Internet connectivity has also been disrupted in several regions.
Sri Lanka typically experiences heavy rainfall during the northeast monsoon season at this time of year, but recent conditions were intensified by a low-pressure system impacting the island’s eastern region.
