Energy Prices Set to Climb as Middle East Tensions Persist, Says E.ON
Berlin: German energy company E.ON expects electricity and gas prices to continue rising over the long term amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, according to senior officials.
Filip Thon, CEO of E.ON Energie Deutschland, said that price levels seen before the escalation are unlikely to return in the near future, noting that wholesale energy prices will remain above pre-crisis levels for an extended period due to higher procurement costs.
He pointed out that gas prices have risen by about 75 percent and electricity prices by 35 percent on a temporary basis this year. Contracts for next year have also increased, with gas up by around 60 percent and electricity by 20 percent.
Thon explained that while short-term fluctuations are not directly reflected in consumer tariffs, the general trend of energy prices remains upward.
E.ON is Germany’s largest energy supplier, with around 12 million electricity contracts and 2 million gas contracts. It also operates the country’s largest electricity distribution network through its subsidiaries, accounting for nearly one-third of the total network length.
