Brussels: New car registrations in Europe increased for the fifth consecutive month in November 2025, supported by strong growth in battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales, according to data released today by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).
Car registrations rose by 2.1 percent year-on-year in November, following a stronger 5.8 percent increase recorded in October.
Battery-electric car sales surged by 44.1 percent compared to November last year, reflecting accelerating demand for zero-emission vehicles. Sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles also posted robust growth, advancing by 38.4 percent, while hybrid-electric vehicle sales grew by a more modest 4.2 percent.
In contrast, registrations of petrol-powered cars declined sharply by 21.9 percent, while diesel car sales fell by 23.2 percent year-on-year.
Between January and November 2025, total new car registrations across the European Union increased by 1.4 percent compared to the same period in 2024. Despite the recent positive momentum, ACEA noted that overall registration volumes remain significantly below pre-pandemic levels.
Battery-electric vehicles accounted for a 16.9 percent market share during the year-to-date period, a figure in line with current projections. However, ACEA stressed that further growth is needed to remain on track with Europe’s transition toward emissions-free transport.
The association also highlighted that hybrid-electric vehicles continue to be the most popular choice among buyers, capturing 34.6 percent of the market during the first eleven months of the year. Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel vehicles declined to 36.1 percent, down from 45.8 percent over the same period last year.
