Kaja Kallas Says EU May Expand Red Sea Naval Operations
Brussels: European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that the bloc is considering expanding its Red Sea naval mission, known as “Aspides,” to include the protection of maritime navigation across the wider region following the end of the war in Iran.
Speaking after a meeting of EU defense ministers, Kallas said that Operation Aspides currently contributes to safeguarding navigation in the Red Sea, noting that its activities could be extended to cover broader regional waters.
She added that several countries have pledged additional naval vessels for the mission, which would support any future decision to expand its operational scope.
The European Union launched Operation Aspides in February 2024 following attacks targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
The mission’s mandate was later extended until 28 February 2027 after a strategic review conducted by the European Union.
