European Council to Convene Extraordinary EU Leaders’ Meeting Over Greenland Tensions
Brussels: The European Council announced its intention to convene an extraordinary meeting of European Union leaders in the coming days, following consultations among EU member state ambassadors in Brussels to discuss the latest developments related to tensions over Greenland.
European Council President Antonio Costa said the decision to hold the meeting comes “in light of the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate” the European Union’s response.
Costa stated that EU member states reaffirmed their shared assessment that the imposition of tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and is incompatible with the EU–US trade agreement. He added that the bloc remains ready to defend itself against any form of coercion, while continuing to engage constructively with the United States on all issues of mutual interest.
He further noted that consultations with member states regarding the latest tensions over Greenland reaffirmed their strong commitment to unity based on the principles of international law, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty, as well as unity in support of and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.
Costa also underscored the member states’ recognition of the shared transatlantic interest in maintaining peace and security in the Arctic region, highlighting cooperation through NATO as a key framework for addressing these challenges.
