European Union Moves to Address Drug Shortages with New Measures

EU Strengthens Pharmaceutical Supply Chains Through Public Funding

Brussels: Negotiators in the European Union (EU) have reached an agreement on new rules aimed at supporting the production of critical medicines through the use of public funds, as part of efforts to address drug shortages across the bloc.

Representatives of the European Parliament and EU member states stated that the measures are intended to strengthen pharmaceutical supply chains and reduce dependence on external suppliers.

Cypriot Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, said that the agreement represents a practical step towards reducing supply bottlenecks, diversifying supply chains, and enhancing Europe’s capacity to locally produce essential medicines and their components.

The new measures come amid growing European efforts to improve pharmaceutical security and ensure the availability of critical medicines across member states.
