Eurozone Records €1 Billion Goods Trade Deficit in April

Brussels:  The eurozone recorded a goods trade deficit of €1 billion with the rest of the world in April 2026, compared to a surplus of €8.7 billion in the same month of 2025, according to data released by Eurostat.

Exports increased by 5 percent year-on-year to reach €255.4 billion, while imports rose by 9.3 percent to €256.4 billion, resulting in a shift from surplus to deficit.

Eurostat attributed the deterioration primarily to a wider energy trade deficit and a lower surplus in machinery and vehicles.

The April figure also represented a decline from the €4.9 billion surplus recorded in March 2026.

During the first four months of 2026, eurozone exports decreased by 3.6 percent to €970.1 billion, while imports increased by 1.5 percent to €957.2 billion.

Intra-eurozone trade rose by 3.1 percent during the same period, reaching €924.9 billion.

At the European Union level, the bloc recorded a goods trade deficit of €7.1 billion in April 2026, compared to a surplus of €7.3 billion in April 2025.

EU exports increased by 3.2 percent to €225.7 billion, while imports rose by 10.1 percent to €232.8 billion.

Eurostat said the decline in the EU trade balance was also driven by higher energy costs and reduced surpluses in machinery and vehicle trade.

From January to April 2026, EU exports fell by 5.8 percent to €857.7 billion, while imports edged up by 0.8 percent to €859.9 billion.

Meanwhile, intra-EU trade increased by 4.2 percent to €1.45 trillion during the same period.
