Moscow: Two people have died and about 4,000 residents were evacuated in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan following the partial collapse of a dam caused by heavy rainfall, according to the republic’s civil protection authorities.
Floodwaters inundated around 2,000 homes in the coastal district of Derbent on the Caspian Sea. Authorities confirmed the recovery of the bodies of a woman and her daughter, while search operations continue for several missing persons.
Reports indicated that flooding has also affected the capital, Makhachkala, where a number of residential buildings are at risk due to the impact of the rising المياه.
Emergency shelters have been established to accommodate displaced residents, as forecasts warn of continued rainfall and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, raising concerns over further landslides.
The North Caucasus region has been experiencing heavy rainfall since late March, leading to widespread flooding that has also impacted power infrastructure and caused electricity outages in several districts across Dagestan.
