Beijing: Global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) recorded growth for the second consecutive month in April 2026, supported by continued high petrol prices that encouraged consumers to shift away from conventional fuel-powered vehicles, according to data issued by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.
The data showed that registrations of new battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 6 percent in April 2026 compared to the same month last year, reaching 1.6 million vehicles. The figure represents a key indicator of global sales performance.
Despite the annual increase, registrations declined by 9 percent compared to the record monthly level recorded in March 2026.
Benchmark Mineral Intelligence stated that demand continues to receive support from elevated fuel prices and the growing expansion of Chinese original equipment manufacturers in global markets.
Several governments have also continued implementing measures aimed at limiting fuel price increases following disruptions to one of the major oil shipping routes in the Middle East caused by the ongoing regional conflict.
