Gulf Green Mobility Lab in Salalah Explores EV Charging and Green Hydrogen

Salalah (ONA): The “Gulf Green Mobility System Lab”—organized today in Salalah by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology as part of the Gulf Green Mobility Forum 2026—discussed a number of policies, regulations, and technical solutions related to developing the sustainable mobility system in the countries of the GCC, with a focus on electric charging infrastructure and the role of green hydrogen in the heavy sector transport and logistics system.

The lab, held at Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah, addressed in its first theme the regulatory frameworks and legislation governing electric vehicle charging stations, as well as operation and management models for charging station operators, alongside ways to integrate charging infrastructure with smart grids and load management.

Participants also discussed investment and licensing challenges, the provision of supporting infrastructure for electric mobility, and the role of governments in creating a conducive regulatory environment and encouraging the private sector to participate in developing and expanding the electric charging market.

The second theme focused on the role of green hydrogen in reducing emissions in the heavy transport sector, including trucks and buses, and the readiness of logistics infrastructure to accommodate hydrogen technologies and their applications in the transport sector.

The lab reviewed green hydrogen supply chain models in ports and industrial zones, along with policies and incentives that could contribute to growing the demand for hydrogen in the transport sector, supporting the transition toward low-emission transport solutions.

The lab is expected to contribute to producing a roadmap for regulatory and technical gaps associated with electric mobility infrastructure, alongside establishing recommendations that contribute to developing emerging markets in green mobility and drafting an initial framework for integration between electric charging systems and hydrogen solutions in the heavy transport sector.

The lab aims to enhance regional cooperation among GCC countries in sustainable mobility projects and exchange expertise and experiences in developing policies, infrastructure, and technologies supporting the transition in the transport sector.

The lab represents a platform for dialogue among concerned entities to identify priorities and challenges and lay out practical tracks that can support the development of an integrated green mobility system at the GCC level.
