ICESCO Delegation Explores Dhofar’s Cultural and Natural Heritage

Salalah (ONA): A delegation from the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) today visited landmarks of tourism and heritage in the Governorate of Dhofar.

The tour, which also covered natural sites, was part of an ICESCO cultural program codenamed “Bridges of Civilization” that is being hosted by the Sultanate of Oman until 28 August 2026.

The delegation was led by Dr. Salem Mohammed Al Malik, Director General of the ICESCO. The program aims to promote cultural communication among ICESCO and member states, showcase civilizational, cultural, heritage and tourism assets of Dhofar Governorate and to outline national experiences in preserving heritage and using it in the development of sustainable tourism.

The visit’s program included the “Land of Frankincense” sites, where the members of the ICESCO delegation were briefed about methods of frankincense production and the status of this industry in the cultural and economic heritage of the governorate.

The delegation members also learned about local crafts and products, markets, events and community experiences. In addition, the program covered natural sites like Wadi Darbat, Ain Razat, Wadi Nahiz, Ain Sahalnoot, the beaches of Al Mughsail and Al Dahariz and Jabal Samhan mountain.

Dr. Salem Hilal Al Habsi, Director of the Secretariat General of National Committees and Conferences at ICESCO, said that the “Bridges of Civilization” program embodies the organization’s vision to enhance civilizational diplomacy and direct communication among member states, as well as opportunities for cooperation and joint initiatives.

For his part, Talal Humaid Al Khusaibi, Director General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, said that the visit of the ICESCO delegation stems from Oman’s keenness to consolidate cooperation with international organizations and institutions and to showcase Dhofar Governorate’s heritage, cultural and tourism landmarks.

He underscored the significance of such visits in highlighting Oman’s experiences in preserving heritage and using it in a sustainable manner.

The visit demonstrates the volume of integration among components of heritage, nature and tourism in Dhofar Governorate. This underlines the Governorate’s position as a destination for sustainable cultural and natural tourism. It also contributes to enhancing the presence of Oman’s heritage in the global arena.
