Capitals: Israel launched airstrikes during the early hours of today targeting locations in central and western Iran, following missile launches from Iran, in a development that has heightened concerns about a wider regional conflict in the Middle East.
The escalation comes amid growing concerns over regional security and potential implications for global energy supplies.
Iranian state television reported explosions in the cities of Isfahan, Karaj, Tabriz and Tehran. No further details were immediately provided.
Iranian authorities also announced the closure of airspace surrounding Imam Khomeini International Airport following the strikes.
In a statement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted Israel’s Ramat David Airbase with ballistic missiles, describing the facility as a launch point for Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon.
The statement added that Iran’s acceptance of a ceasefire announced on 8 April had been contingent on the cessation of hostilities across all fronts.
Meanwhile, air raid sirens sounded in several areas of Israel after the Israeli military reported the launch of a missile from Yemen towards Israeli territory.
Israeli emergency services said no casualties or injuries had been reported. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the missile launch.
In a separate statement issued before dawn, the Israeli military said it had struck what it described as military targets in western and central Iran.
The IRGC stated that Israel had used air-launched ballistic missiles in the operation but did not provide further details.
In Lebanon, the developments coincided with continued tensions involving Hezbollah amid ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon and recent strikes near Beirut, raising concerns about a possible expansion of the conflict.
On the diplomatic front, the White House did not immediately comment on reports regarding coordination with Israel.
A US official was quoted by media reports as saying that President Donald Trump had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to exercise restraint following the Iranian attack and postpone any immediate response.
The developments come amid stalled US-Iran negotiations and continuing tensions across several regional fronts, including Lebanon and Yemen.
