Nikkei Surges Past 53,000 as Japanese Stocks Hit Record Highs

Tokyo: Major stock indices in Japan closed at record levels today, with the Nikkei Stock Average surpassing the 53,000-point mark for the first time.

The Nikkei 225 advanced 1,609.27 points, or 3.10 percent, from Friday’s close to end the session at 53,549.16 points. The broader Topix index also posted strong gains, rising 84.78 points, or 2.41 percent, to close at 3,598.89 points.

Both indices reached their highest levels on record during the trading session.
