Final Stages of Government Units Football Championship Underway
Muscat: The 2026 Government Units 8-a-side Football Championship, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth in Muscat, has reached its final stages following the conclusion of the preliminary round matches.
Eight matches are scheduled to be played this evening. Fixtures include the Shura Council versus Royal Court Affairs; the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning versus the Authority for Public Services Regulation; the Ministry of Social Development versus the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources; and the SMEs Development Authority (Riyada) versus the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.
Additional matches will see the Environment Authority face the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, the Supreme Judiciary Council compete against the Diwan of Royal Court, and the National Records and Archives Authority play the Ministry of Interior.
The knockout phase of the tournament will commence next Monday with the Round of 16, featuring the top two teams from each of the eight groups. The participating teams were divided into eight groups, with four teams in each group. Tournament activities are scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, 24 January.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth stated that the championship aims to provide a competitive sporting platform for government employees, promote interaction among government institutions, and strengthen social ties. The event also seeks to encourage physical activity, support a spirit of fair play, reduce work-related pressures, and contribute to improved public health through organized sports participation.
