Lebanese Officials Call for End to Israeli Strikes Despite Ceasefire

Beirut:  Lebanese authorities today called on the United States to pressure Israel to halt its continued attacks inside Lebanon, despite the ceasefire currently in effect between the two sides.

Lebanese official sources stated that the death toll resulting from Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon since 2 March 2026 has risen to 2,869, including dozens of casualties recorded after the ceasefire entered into force on 17 April 2026.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam urged US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa to intensify efforts aimed at stopping Israeli attacks and violations in order to preserve stability and maintain the ceasefire agreement.

The calls came amid preparations for a third direct meeting between Lebanese and Israeli representatives scheduled to be held in Washington on Thursday and Friday.

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, Israeli airstrikes over the weekend targeted more than 30 locations in southern and eastern Lebanon, extending to areas approximately 20 kilometres from Beirut, resulting in casualties.

The Israeli military also issued evacuation warnings for nine Lebanese towns, including seven towns in southern Lebanon and two in the western Beqaa region.

The agency reported that the warnings led to a wave of displacement from the towns of Mashghara and Qaliya in western Beqaa.

Despite the ceasefire announced and later extended by US President Donald Trump, Israeli military operations, including airstrikes, demolitions, and detonations of houses in border areas, continue.

For its part, the Israeli military announced the death of one of its soldiers during clashes near the Lebanese border, bringing the number of Israeli military fatalities since the start of the conflict to 18.
