Over One Million Displaced in Lebanon as UN Highlights War Impact
Beirut: The United Nations (UN) has warned of severe humanitarian repercussions resulting from the ongoing war in Lebanon, urging the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure from continued attacks.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih made the remarks following a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, noting that the discussions reaffirmed international support and solidarity with Lebanon amid current challenges.
Salih stressed that Lebanon should not remain caught in repeated cycles of violence, emphasizing the country’s need for stability and sustained support.
He pointed out that the Lebanese population, which has historically hosted large numbers of refugees and displaced persons, is now facing widespread displacement. More than one million people have been forced from their homes, representing nearly 20 percent of the country’s population.
Salih added that the scale of the humanitarian situation presents a major challenge not only for Lebanon but also for the international community, given the level of suffering and urgent needs.
He indicated that efforts by UNHCR and other UN agencies are ongoing to provide humanitarian assistance. However, he underlined that the magnitude of the crisis requires increased international backing to address the growing needs.
