Liverpool: Liverpool secured a dramatic 2–1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield in a match overshadowed by a potentially serious injury to record signing Alexander Isak, deepening manager Arne Slot’s growing selection concerns.
The contest swung between hope and concern for the hosts in the second half. Introduced as a substitute, the £125 million striker Isak made an immediate impact, opening his Liverpool account in the 73rd minute with a composed finish past goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, following a well-weighted assist from Florian Wirtz.
Moments later, however, celebrations turned to anxiety when Isak was brought down by Micky van de Ven in a heavy challenge. The forward was stretchered off in visible discomfort, casting a shadow over Liverpool’s victory.
Liverpool’s injury woes continued throughout the match. Conor Bradley was forced off at halftime, while his replacement Jeremie Frimpong, making his first appearance since October, was withdrawn late on as a precaution.
Despite Tottenham being reduced to nine men following red cards shown to Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero, Liverpool were unable to fully assert control. Spurs threatened a late comeback before Hugo Ekitike sealed the win with an 89th-minute goal, easing the tension inside Anfield.
The victory extends Liverpool’s unbeaten run to six matches and lifts them level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea ahead of the congested festive schedule. Nevertheless, the result came at a cost, leaving Slot facing mounting injury concerns as his side continues to search for stability despite positive results.
