Massive Fire Hits Sandakan Village, 200 Homes Destroyed
Kuala Lumpur: A large fire broke out in the waterfront village of Kampung Bahajia in Sandakan, Malaysia, resulting in the destruction of nearly 200 wooden stilt houses and the displacement of hundreds of residents.
Jimmy Lagung, Head of the city’s Fire and Rescue Station, said firefighting operations were ongoing, noting that the blaze had not yet been brought under control. He explained that narrow access roads were hindering the movement of fire engines and delaying response efforts.
He added that strong winds and the close proximity of houses contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, while low tide conditions limited access to water sources required for firefighting.
For his part, Datuk Walter Kenson, Head of the city’s Disaster Management Committee, announced a state of emergency following the incident and confirmed the activation of a temporary shelter to accommodate affected residents. He noted that the damaged homes are no longer fit for habitation.
Preliminary estimates indicate that around 445 people from 89 families have been displaced as a result of the fire.
