Colombians Vote in Presidential Election to Choose Successor to Gustavo Petro
Bogotá: Colombians headed to the polls today to elect a new president, with leading candidates including Iván Cepeda, Paloma Valencia and Abilardo de la Espriella.
Around 41 million citizens are eligible to vote in the election to choose a successor to President Gustavo Petro, who is constitutionally prohibited from seeking a second term in office.
Colombian media reported that more than 400,000 soldiers and police personnel have been deployed across the country to secure polling stations and safeguard the electoral process.
According to opinion polls, no candidate is expected to secure an outright majority in the first round of voting. In such a case, a runoff election will be held on 21 June 2026 between the top two candidates.
