New MIT Sensor Diagnoses Lung Disease in Minutes Using Breath Analysis
Washington: Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed an experimental sensor capable of diagnosing lung diseases, including pneumonia, through the analysis of a patient’s breath.
The technology is based on a miniature chip designed to detect synthetic compounds known as biomarkers. These biomarkers are linked to inhalable nanoparticles that act as indicators, releasing detectable signals when they interact with specific disease-related enzymes in the lungs.
Once released, the biomarkers are identified by the sensor, which determines the presence of illness. The device utilizes advanced techniques, including spectroscopy and plasmonics, to detect extremely low concentrations of these compounds with high accuracy.
Laboratory tests have demonstrated the sensor’s ability to identify chemical signals at very low levels, enabling rapid diagnosis within minutes without the need for invasive procedures such as blood sampling or conventional imaging.
Researchers indicated that the technology could support early detection of lung diseases and contribute to improved treatment outcomes.
The findings also suggest that the sensor may have broader applications, including the detection of other respiratory conditions, airborne pollutants, and diseases that can be identified through breath analysis.
