Jakarta: Indonesia’s Mount Semeru in East Java erupted nine times yesterday, sending volcanic ash columns up to 1,000 metres above its summit, according to official reports.
Indonesia’s Antara news agency stated that alert measures remain in place, with authorities urging residents to avoid high-risk areas around the volcano.
Mount Semeru, which stands at 3,676 metres, recorded its first eruption at 12:07 am, producing an ash plume rising about 700 metres and drifting southward due to prevailing winds.
Liswanto, an official at the Semeru Volcano Monitoring Post, said that the strongest eruption occurred at 5:19 am, generating an ash column reaching approximately 1,000 metres above the peak.
He added that seismic activity linked to the eruptions continues to be a dominant feature of the volcano’s activity.
