Musandam Develops Tourism Infrastructure to Attract Visitors and Investors

Khasab: Musandam Governorate is strengthening its position as a promising tourism and investment destination, benefiting from its distinctive natural and geographical features that combine mountains, marine inlets, beaches, islands and valleys.

The governorate’s diverse natural assets provide a foundation for developing the tourism sector, diversifying tourism products and experiences, attracting visitors from inside and outside the Sultanate of Oman, and creating investment opportunities in accommodation, marine activities and ecotourism.

Hamad bin Ibrahim Al-Shehhi, Director of Khasab Municipality, said that Musandam’s natural, geographical and heritage characteristics provide exceptional assets that qualify the governorate to establish itself as a promising tourism and investment destination locally and internationally.

He explained that maximising the benefits of these assets requires modern infrastructure and an integrated services system capable of keeping pace with tourism growth. The municipality is therefore implementing a number of development and service projects aimed at improving infrastructure efficiency, enhancing the urban landscape and increasing the attractiveness of the governorate’s wilayats to residents, visitors and investors.

The projects include developing waterfronts and public parks, paving roads, improving the transport network, installing modern lighting systems, enhancing urban landscaping and developing public facilities and services.

Al-Shehhi noted that waterfront development represents an important pillar in strengthening Musandam’s tourism appeal by providing public spaces and facilities that make use of its distinctive coastal locations, enhance the visual character of its wilayats and stimulate tourism and economic activity throughout the year.

He added that road and lighting projects facilitate access to tourist and service sites, improve traffic flow and safety, and enhance the overall visitor experience.

The municipality views infrastructure development as a long-term investment that supports tourism growth, strengthens the governorate’s competitiveness, creates an attractive investment environment, stimulates tourism-related economic activities and supports small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurship.

He said the Office of the Governor of Musandam attaches particular importance to developing the tourism sector as part of the governorate’s development priorities, through greater integration between government entities and the private sector and by following up on tourism initiatives and projects in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.

Al-Shehhi added that development plans are being implemented through an integrated approach that considers tourism growth and development requirements while preserving natural resources and the governorate’s cultural identity.

He also pointed to cooperation with various partners to invest in Musandam’s natural and tourism assets through programmes and events held as part of the “Musandam Winter Season”, which contribute to stimulating tourism and highlighting the governorate’s competitive advantages.

Diverse Natural and Tourism Assets

Nawfal bin Mohammed Al-Kamzari, Assistant Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Musandam Governorate, said the governorate’s calm beaches, clear waters, marine inlets, islands and rich marine life give it a distinctive tourism character.

He noted that the towering mountains provide panoramic views of the sea and coastal villages, while valleys across the governorate add further natural and aesthetic diversity.

This combination of mountains, sea, islands and valleys enables visitors to enjoy a range of experiences that bring together relaxation, adventure and nature exploration.

Al-Kamzari said the natural diversity provides opportunities to develop tourism products based on beaches, marine inlets, islands and mountainous areas. Potential investment includes hotels and resorts overlooking the coast, cruises and marine excursions, as well as activities focused on exploring inlets, islands and marine life.

The mountainous areas also offer opportunities for hiking trails, camping and adventure activities, allowing tourism projects and services to cater to different categories of visitors.

He said integrating natural assets with modern tourism projects and services would contribute to increasing visitor numbers, enhancing economic returns and strengthening Musandam’s position as a distinguished tourism destination.

Among the governorate’s prominent tourist attractions are Khor Sham, Telegraph Island, Jabal Harim and its marine islands, in addition to beaches including Basah, Hal and Al-Khalidiyah.

Musandam also features historic forts, including Khasab, Bukha, Dibba and Al-Kumzarah forts, as well as distinctive sites and villages such as Khor Al Najd, Kumzar, Lima and the mountain villages.

These locations offer visitors experiences combining nature, heritage and opportunities to explore local lifestyles.

Al-Kamzari described Musandam’s geographical character as a major attraction for visitors seeking nature-based and adventure tourism, as its mountains, marine inlets and beaches are concentrated within a unique geographical setting.

Visitors can enjoy cruises, explore creeks and islands, observe marine life, hike mountain trails, camp and experience the governorate’s natural landscapes.

The governorate’s pristine environment and tranquillity also provide opportunities for visitors seeking relaxation away from urban centres, while adventure enthusiasts can explore mountain trails, traditional villages and distinctive landscapes.

Tourism Infrastructure and Services

Al-Kamzari said the development of infrastructure and tourism services remains an important element in improving the visitor experience.

Efforts are continuing to develop roads and streets to facilitate access to tourist sites and natural landmarks, alongside providing public facilities and services for residents and visitors.

The governorate has also witnessed expansion in hotels and tourist resorts and the provision of diverse accommodation options, in addition to the development of public gardens, parks, beaches and waterfronts equipped with service and recreational facilities.

These projects contribute to creating a more integrated tourism environment that combines accessibility, comfort and recreation, enabling visitors to make greater use of Musandam’s natural and tourism resources.

Regarding ongoing tourism projects, Nawfal bin Mohammed Al-Kamzari, Assistant Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Musandam Governorate, said the governorate is witnessing the implementation of a number of tourism and heritage projects aimed at developing the tourism sector and enhancing Musandam’s attractiveness.

Among the key projects is the tourist hotel project in the Ras Amoud area, which is expected to provide modern accommodation facilities that meet visitors’ needs and support the growth of the tourism sector.

He added that the Visitors Centre project in the Wilayat of Dibba is also being implemented to provide tourism and heritage services and information, introduce visitors to the governorate’s natural and heritage features, enhance their experience and encourage them to explore additional sites and destinations.

Promising Investment Opportunities

Al-Kamzari said Musandam offers promising investment opportunities across a range of tourism activities, particularly accommodation, including hotels, resorts and hotel apartments.

The governorate also provides opportunities in marine tourism, including tourist cruises, diving centres and excursions to explore its marine inlets and islands.

He noted that ecotourism represents another promising area for investment through the development of eco-lodges, camping sites and nature- and mountain-based activities.

Such projects can contribute to diversifying tourism products and providing new experiences for visitors while maintaining the protection of natural and environmental resources.

He explained that the diversity of investment opportunities enables Musandam to attract tourism projects suited to its unique geographical and natural characteristics and supports its transition towards more sustainable tourism that balances investment, environmental protection and the preservation of cultural identity.

Tourism’s Contribution to the Local Economy

Al-Kamzari said tourism contributes to supporting the local economy in Musandam by stimulating commercial activity and increasing demand for tourism services, transportation and traditional crafts.

Tourism growth also creates direct and indirect employment opportunities for residents, including jobs in hotels, resorts, marine activities and tour guiding, in addition to opportunities for small and medium enterprises operating in tourism-related activities.

He noted that these opportunities enhance the local community’s benefit from tourism development and contribute to diversifying sources of income.

Regarding future plans to strengthen Musandam’s position as a sustainable tourism destination, Al-Kamzari said efforts are focused on expanding the allocation of tourism lands to investors for the development of high-quality tourism projects and facilities.

These include hotels, resorts and recreational facilities that combine quality services with the protection of the environment and natural resources.

He added that promoting sustainable tourism is a key priority in developing the governorate’s tourism sector by making use of its distinctive natural assets while preserving its cultural and heritage identity.

He also stressed the importance of continuing to promote Musandam in regional and international markets through participation in tourism exhibitions, marketing campaigns and digital platforms to attract more visitors and investment.

Al-Kamzari emphasised that integrating Musandam’s natural and heritage assets with infrastructure development, tourism projects and investment opportunities will strengthen the governorate’s position as one of the region’s distinguished tourism destinations.

He noted that these efforts will also create broader prospects for sustainable tourism and economic growth while preserving Musandam’s natural character and cultural identity for future generations.
