Abuja: Nigerian health authorities announced that the death toll from a cholera outbreak in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, has risen to 37, while the number of infections has exceeded 3,000 cases since the beginning of May.
According to Nigeria’s Ministry of Health, the outbreak has spread across 36 areas of Borno State, with the state capital, Maiduguri, accounting for more than half of the recorded cases.
The Ministry stated that efforts are underway, in coordination with international partners, to mobilize the resources required to contain the outbreak and strengthen water supply, sanitation and hygiene systems.
It added that infectious disease treatment centres are being prepared to accommodate the growing number of patients and enhance the response to the outbreak.
A previous official tally had reported 27 fatalities.
Local media described the current outbreak as a public health emergency requiring urgent measures to limit its spread and mitigate its impact.
