Oman Hosts International Date Council Meeting to Strengthen Global Date Sector

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources, today hosted the second meeting of the Executive Board of the International Date Council during its sixth session.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sulaiman bin Ali Al Khatib, Chairman of the Council’s Executive Board.

The meeting reviewed the financial contributions of member states and mechanisms for enhancing the Council’s financial sustainability. It also discussed a United Nations report on date specifications and reviewed the international date standard, including technical issues related to date specifications.

The participants discussed a proposed mechanism for organising the Council’s specialised committees, including updating membership, nomination and selection criteria and procedures, as well as the committees’ tasks and working mechanisms.

The proposed measures aim to enhance the effectiveness of the committees in preparing technical studies and recommendations and contributing to the development of international specifications and standards for dates.

Oman’s hosting of the meeting underscores the importance attached to strengthening international cooperation in the palm and date sector, exchanging expertise and experience, and supporting efforts to develop and sustain the sector and enhance its competitiveness.

The initiative also contributes to strengthening the role of the palm and date sector in food security and agricultural development.
