Oman Strengthens Global Hydrogen Cooperation with International Partnership Membership

Muscat:  The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, has joined the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, an international collaboration focused on developing the hydrogen economy and fuel cell technologies and accelerating their deployment across transportation, industry, power generation and energy storage.

Oman’s accession strengthens its participation in the global hydrogen ecosystem and supports international cooperation in green hydrogen and sustainable energy development, reinforcing the Sultanate’s position in the hydrogen and derivatives sector and supporting its economic and development objectives.

The membership is also aligned with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, particularly in economic diversification, innovation and sustainability, while enhancing Oman’s role in the global hydrogen economy.

The partnership provides Oman with opportunities to expand cooperation with member states and benefit from international best practices in policies, regulatory frameworks and technical standards. It also supports efforts to connect local hydrogen projects with international markets.

Membership will further facilitate cooperation in developing green hydrogen value chains, harmonising standards, specifications and safety requirements, and supporting international trade in hydrogen and its derivatives. These efforts are expected to contribute to greater international alignment and accelerate the safe and economically viable deployment of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.

It will also enable Oman to participate in research, development and innovation programmes and joint pilot projects, while benefiting from international initiatives focused on capacity building and developing specialised national skills needed for the growth of the hydrogen economy and attraction of quality investments.

The accession builds on Oman’s ongoing efforts to develop the green hydrogen sector by leveraging its solar and wind energy resources and establishing an integrated system that supports sustainable development and carbon neutrality, while enhancing the sector’s contribution to the national economy.

Al Aufi Highlights Strategic Importance

His Excellency Engineer Salem bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, stressed the importance of Oman’s accession and its commitment to strengthening international cooperation in hydrogen.

He noted that the membership represents an important milestone in Oman’s efforts to build a hydrogen economy, adding that the Sultanate seeks to establish a competitive global green hydrogen economy.

Al Aufi expressed hope that the membership would contribute to international efforts to drive innovation, enhance cooperation, strengthen national capabilities and advance the policies and standards required for a resilient and sustainable global hydrogen market.

International Partnership Welcomes Oman

Paulo Emilio Valladao de Miranda, President of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, welcomed Oman’s accession, noting that the partnership continues to expand and attract countries committed to developing the global hydrogen economy.

He said Oman’s ambitious vision for low-emission hydrogen, strong renewable energy potential and focus on large-scale production and export opportunities make it a valuable addition to the partnership.

He added that Oman brings expertise and insights in infrastructure, international markets, and policy and standards development, contributing to efforts to establish a resilient and sustainable global hydrogen economy.

Dr. Laurent Anthony, Executive Director of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, said Oman’s accession represents an important addition to the partnership, given its renewable energy potential, ambitious hydrogen development programme and focus on building the capabilities and frameworks needed to support the emerging industry.

He expressed the partnership’s readiness to work with Oman and facilitate the exchange of expertise among members, particularly in addressing common challenges related to infrastructure, standards, skills and the development of international hydrogen markets.
