Dhofar Launches Initiative to Empower Mothers of People with Disabilities

Salalah: An initiative aimed at empowering mothers of people with disabilities was launched today in Dhofar Governorate at an event held at the theatre of the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Salalah.

The event was held under the patronage of Her Highness Hajija bint Jaifar Al Said.

Amal bint Ahmed Al Ibrahim, Head of the Omani Association for People with Disabilities in Dhofar Governorate, said the initiative seeks to empower mothers, develop their abilities and skills in supporting their children with disabilities, and transform their personal experiences into expertise that can benefit families and society.

The initiative follows around a year and a half of work by the association focused on training, discovering talents, building capacities, developing skills and empowering mothers to move from being beneficiaries to becoming leaders, initiators and partners in developing solutions.

It also seeks to establish a dedicated team of mothers of people with disabilities and involve them in committees, programmes and events, while benefiting from their skills and creating a network for exchanging knowledge, experience and support.

The event also witnessed the launch of the association’s bus, funded by OQ Basic Industries, as well as the “Messages from the Heart” initiative, which aims to strengthen the role of mothers in community initiatives and enable them to represent issues affecting people with disabilities and participate actively in society.

The initiative aims to develop a qualified group of mothers, establish a database documenting their talents, skills and areas of expertise, support the creation of mother-led initiatives, and highlight leading female role models representing the association at community forums.
