Riyadh: The Sultanate of Oman participated in the closing ceremony of the Diplomatic Conference for the Conclusion and Adoption of a Treaty on Design Law in Riyadh, during which member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) approved a new treaty called the “Riyadh Treaty on Design Law”, with the aim of empowering designers and enhancing international cooperation in the field of designs.
The Sultanate of Oman was represented by His Excellency Ambassador Idris bin Abdul Rahman Al-Khanjari, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva.
The Sultanate of Oman signed the final document of the Riyadh Treaty on Design Law, which is an important foundation in the field of intellectual property rights due to its social and economic impacts and its contribution to promoting innovation among designers, and as an affirmation of the Sultanate of Oman’s firm commitment to joining the international efforts that member states have been making to launch initiatives aimed at protecting intellectual property rights and highlighting their importance in all national laws and legislation.
The Treaty will greatly contribute to enhancing the efficiency and transparency of the patent system and industrial design agreements, as well as supporting designers around the world by creating less complex and costly procedures, and enabling designers to protect their designs and earn income from their creative works.
The Riyadh Design Law Treaty links the protection of designs with the protection of traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions through a provision that allows Contracting Parties to require applicants to provide information on traditional cultural expressions and traditional knowledge relevant to the eligibility for registration of an industrial design.
