Oman Water Sector Advances Sustainability Through Technology and Innovation

Muscat: The water sector in the Sultanate of Oman is advancing efforts to strengthen sustainability, water security and economic resilience through the integration of technology, governance and environmentally responsible practices.

Nama Water Services is developing a new operational model aimed at strengthening the relationship between water management, sustainability and technology. The company is incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into its operational processes and institutional decision-making, with the objective of building a more efficient, proactive and sustainable water system.

The company’s strategy is aligned with the Global Reporting Initiative standards and includes a roadmap extending to 2027. The roadmap focuses on developing policies and frameworks, strengthening operational integration and promoting continuous improvement, supporting the company’s efforts to achieve internationally recognised sustainability and governance ratings.

Eng. Ahmed bin Rashid Al Khamisi, CEO of Business Assurance and Excellence at Nama Water Services, said the company is working to integrate ESG principles across its operations and strategic decisions, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.

He added in a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA) that the company is developing a data- and artificial intelligence-based operational system and deploying advanced technologies across various processes, viewing water as a long-term investment in the stability and sustainability of the future.

Al Khamisi noted that the company has developed and launched a financial sustainability framework aimed at utilising sustainable financing instruments, including green, blue and social bonds, to support projects with positive environmental and social impacts.

He stressed that expanding low-emission solutions and renewable energy projects is an important part of the company’s efforts to develop a more efficient operational system, reduce its environmental footprint and support long-term sustainability objectives.

He also highlighted the Green Harvest initiative as one of the approaches supporting the company’s efforts to develop a water system that is more resilient to climate change by maximising the use of natural resources and reducing the effects of environmental and climatic fluctuations.

Nama Water Services currently serves more than 4 million beneficiaries across the Sultanate of Oman. Local added value generated during the past year exceeded RO 100 million, reflecting the company’s contribution to the national economy, support for small and medium enterprises and promotion of local content.

Eng. Riya bint Ali Al Abri, Director of the Environment, Society and Governance Project at Nama Water Services, said ESG principles represent key strategic enablers for sustainable resource management and strengthening the water sector’s readiness to address accelerating environmental and climate challenges.

She explained that the adoption of these principles contributes to improving resource efficiency, reducing environmental impacts and supporting sustainable projects based on innovation and digital transformation.

Al Abri added that the approach also supports a more adaptable operational system, promotes a fair working environment and equal opportunities, empowers national competencies, and strengthens community initiatives and local development.

She affirmed that Nama Water Services continues to consolidate its approach towards more sustainable and innovative water resource management through an integrated system combining technology, governance, operational excellence and sustainability.
