342 Events Planned as Rabat Prepares for World Book Capital 2026

Rabat:  The programme for Rabat as the “World Book Capital 2026” has been officially announced, with activities set to commence on 24 April, featuring 342 cultural events.

Latifa Mouftakir, Commissioner General of the programme, said that Rabat will host a year-long initiative centred on promoting reading and strengthening engagement with cultural content.

She explained that the programme includes activities across 12 themes, such as open reading events, literary cafés, exhibitions, mobile libraries, workshops, training courses, and conferences for publishing professionals.

The initiative also extends to public spaces and community institutions, including hospitals, correctional facilities, youth centres, transport hubs and parks, aiming to broaden access to books and knowledge.

Mouftakir noted that Rabat’s selection by UNESCO reflects its long-standing cultural and intellectual heritage, supported by historic libraries, mosques, universities and cultural institutions.

Rabat succeeds Rio de Janeiro, which held the title in 2025. The Moroccan capital was recognised by UNESCO for its role in promoting knowledge exchange and supporting the development of the publishing sector, with the city hosting 54 publishing houses.
