Trial Reopening of Rafah Crossing Marks Step Toward Restoring Movement
Gaza: Trial operations began today at the Rafah land border crossing with the Arab Republic of Egypt, marking a tentative step toward reopening the crossing after more than one and a half years of near-total closure.
Shadi Othman, Media Officer at the European Union Office in Jerusalem, stated that the crossing is undergoing trial operations aimed at facilitating the movement of Palestinians to and from the Gaza Strip.
He explained that the primary objective at this stage is to ensure the bidirectional opening of the crossing, allowing for the smooth transit of residents in both directions.
Othman emphasized that the legal basis for the European Union’s mission at the Rafah crossing is grounded in previously signed agreements, notably the 2005 Agreement, noting that the EU’s role focuses on monitoring and verification to ensure compliance with agreed standards.
He added that the European Union had previously been present during earlier periods of operation at the crossing, including during the first truce phase, which enabled a number of Palestinian citizens to leave the Gaza Strip.
It is worth noting that on May 7, 2024, the Israeli occupying forces advanced into the Rafah crossing from the Palestinian side and imposed a complete closure, resulting in the suspension of passenger movement and the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
